The Outreach laboratory of CMAT decided to celebrate Pi Day in 2019 with a large-scale event.
For a week, a space was made available in Pedagogical Complex II of the University of Minho, for schools from the region and university students passing by to help build a level 3 Menger Sponge.
This is a mega origami, built using only rectangular cards, specifically 48,000 cards, which were symbolically cut from leftover covers of master's and doctoral theses.
There was a lot of prior work done in the Department of Mathematics, where the first level 2 sponges were fabricated, as documented in the images below.
We also elaborated posters with instructions to build the Menger Sponge (in Portuguese), which you can see below the photos.
