Abstract:
We present a novel analytical solution for a minimum-time optimal control problem, applied to the induction phase of anesthesia. This phase is modeled using the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model, which governs the infusion of the anesthetic agent propofol. The goal is to determine the optimal infusion profile that transitions a patient from the awake state to the anesthetized state in the shortest possible time. By applying Pontryagin's Minimum Principle, we derive the structure of the optimal control and introduce a conventional numerical approach using the shooting method to validate our results.
